Rheological behavior of a low crystallinity polyolefin-modified asphalt binder for flexible pavements

نویسندگان

چکیده

An asphalt binder (PG 64?22) is modified with a crystallizable copolymer of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) to enhance its ability resist rutting in flexible pavements during periods warm weather. After cooling binders from the mixing temperature at controlled rate 3 °C/min, their microstructure rheological behavior are characterized. The asphalts exhibit two-phase morphology droplets maltene-rich polymer phase less than 50 ?m size dispersed an asphaltene-rich, continuous phase. X-ray diffraction patterns optical birefringence microscopy indicate that PP/PE segregates matrix cooling, forming network interconnected, crystalline fibrils. At temperatures (50–80) °C, which issue pavements, addition substantially increases factor by 2–6, depending on concentration. (?20 0) 5 wt.% or modifier has minimal impact performance based both s -value m -value. -controlled, ?T c about 6.4 suggesting effective for reducing pavements.

Behavior of Flexible Pavements on Expansive Soils

This investigation discusses the findings on analysis results of a pavement structure constructed on a relatively expansive material consisting mainly of brown clayey silt in Tebessa, Algeria. Cores were brought to the laboratory from a piece of roadwork. Remolded samples were taken from subgrade of a deteriorated road. The soils were generally found to be of medium plasticity and of a medium t...

Rut Resistant Asphalt Pavements

The three major distress conditions affecting the performance of asphalt pavements are permanent deformation or rutting, fatigue or load associated cracking, and low temperature or thermal cracking. In an earlier technical topics article (Fall, 1998), we examined the causes of fatigue cracking and the importance of good compaction during construction to help minimize this type of distress. In t...

Rheological Properties and Chemical Bonding of Asphalt Modified with Nanosilica

The objective of this study is to evaluate the rheological properties and chemical bonding of nano-modified asphalt binders blended with nanosilica. In this study, the nanosilica was added to the control asphalt at contents of 4% and 6% based on the weight of asphalt binders. Superpave binder and mixture tests were utilized in this study to estimate the characteristics of the nano-modifed aspha...

Rheological Characterization of Bituminous Binder containing Wax based Warm Mix Asphalt Additive

Warm mix asphalt (WMA) has been gaining increasing popularity in recent years due to energy savings and environmental benefits. The mechanism of WMA is to use some additives or technologies to reduce the viscosity of bitumen and to modify the rheological behavior of bituminous binders, and thus improve the workability of the mixture at lower temperature. In this study a paraffin wax based addit...
